On the occasion of his 50 years in medicine and research, Dr. Good was honored by over 500 members of the academic and professional societies to which he belonged. This celebration took place in St. Petersburg, Florida between May 19-21, 1994. The occasion was celebrated under the title of:
"Perspectives in Immunology and Medicine; A Symposium in Honor of Dr. Robert A. Good 1944-1994"
Dr. Good and his wife, Dr. Day, were feted by many noted luminaries in the fields of medicine and research as well as by the Hon. Bill Young, member of the U.S. Congress, the President of the University of South Florida, Ambassador and Mrs. Marker, the President of All Children's Hospital, Mr. Dennis Sexton and many others.
The highlight of the festivities was a surprise visit by David Camp and his family. David was the recipient of the first successful bone marrow transplant, by Dr. Good, in November of 1968. David was the only boy in the Camp family and was stricken with hitherto fatal X-linked Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease, SCID. Thanks to Dr. Good and his colleagues, they were able to successfully transplant bone marrow from one of David's sisters into his own immune system.
A complication set in and David developed agamaglobulinanemia. Rather than destroying the first transplant of bone marrow to try and save his life, it was agreed by Dr. Good and David's family to go ahead and try a second bone marrow transplantation. This second transplant was successful and succeeded in curing, yet another, otherwise fatal disease.
David was accompanied by his parents and sisters, his wife and their children. Audio and video files of the occasion, upon request. |
